SD&G Historical Society announces Winter Speaker Series

Loyalists waiting to draw their lots

SDG COUNTIES, Ontario - Following a full summer of events celebrating the Museum’s 70th Anniversary, the SD&G Historical Society is announcing its event lineup for fall and winter events.

Take the Trivia Challenge

Starting off the year, Trivia Night returns Tuesday, Nov. 10 at Schnitzels Restaurant. Teams of four are invited to try their skills on a wide range of questions and categories with a bit of local history included. The number of teams is limited and the fee to join the fun is $100 per team. Come out for a great night of entertainment and challenge, and at the same time support the Cornwall Community Museum.

2026-27 Speakers’ Series

The popular Speakers Series starts on Nov. 17 also at Schnitzels Restaurant and running monthly until April 2027. For the first presentation, Journey with a Smile, local historian and noted educator Art Buckland takes you through his personal journey of growing up on Sheeks Island during the Seaway years, his experiences as a young fellow who attended Cornwall schools, and then going on to have a large role in education both at St. Lawrence College and as a Board member and Chair of the former SD&G Public School Board (now Upper Canada). Buckland’s wry sense of humour and his unique perspective on his world will make the stories from his book come alive. Art and his wife Janice have four kids, a cat named Cindy Sue, and a farm near Martintown they all call home.

The next event is Dec. 8, when author and retired CSIS analyst, Phil Gurski presents The Fenians: Brotherhood of fools or Canada’s first terrorist threat” and looks back at those years, the extent of the Fenian threat, the government's response and how local communities viewed the situation.

Phil Gurski spent more than three decades in Canada’s national security community and taught intelligence and security at Canadian universities and presented internationally on national security issues. He is the author of several books on terrorism and Canadian security, a regular media commentator, and the host of the Canadian Intelligence Eh! blog and podcast. Currently, Gurski is President and CEO of Borealis Threat and Risk Consulting Ltd and has also advised Public Safety Canada.

In the new year, on Jan. 19, Ginette Guy Mayer’s presentation on her book, Views from the Pilot House will offer a story from the perspective of those who worked on its canals. Feb. 16 will offer a flashback to times when the telegraph ruled the technology world with Graeme Roy sharing a hands-on presentation on the Canadian Railway Telegraph from 1885 - 1967. March’s presentation is still to be confirmed. Wrapping up the Series on April 13, author of several books on local history, Stuart Manson will share his new book on the Early Militia of Stormont.

All presentations will be held in the Back Room at Schnitzels Restaurant at 7 p.m. Each evening will consist of a 45-minute presentation followed by a Q&A session.
