JUNE 19: Loyalist Day in Ontario

Loyalists waiting to draw their lots

SDG COUNTIES, Ontario - SDG Counties is encouraging residents to recognize and celebrate Loyalist Day on June 19, a date that commemorates the enduring legacy of United Empire Loyalists and their foundational role in shaping communities across Eastern Ontario.

Loyalist Day was officially established through the United Empire Loyalists’ Day Act, 1997, marking the anniversary of the Constitutional Act of 1791, which divided the Province of Quebec into Upper and Lower Canada. This historic milestone laid the groundwork for the development of Ontario’s political and social landscape.

The Loyalist story runs deep throughout SDG Counties and the broader St. Lawrence corridor. From historic settlements and waterfront communities to churches, farms, cemeteries, and family names, the influence of Loyalist settlers continues to be visible across the region today. Their contributions helped shape local government, agriculture, commerce, and community development - foundations that remain vital to the area’s identity.

Residents are encouraged to take part in Loyalist Day by exploring local history and heritage. Opportunities include visiting historic sites, museums, cemeteries, and archives; learning about Loyalist families and early settlers; and engaging with community stories that connect the past to the present. Visitors can also explore Loyalist information signage in Iroquois and Morrisburg, or stop by the St. Lawrence Branch Resource Centre, which is hosting a book sale on June 20.

“Loyalist Day is an opportunity for residents across SDG Counties to reflect on the people and stories that helped build our communities," said SDG Counties Warden Francois Landry. "I encourage everyone to take part in activities that celebrate our local history, whether by visiting a historic site, learning more about your community’s roots, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the legacy that continues to shape our region today.”

The United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada, St. Lawrence Branch, continues to work with municipalities, historical groups, and community organizations to preserve and share Loyalist history for future generations.
