SDG COUNTIES, Ontario - On Aug. 20, 2025, the earth moved — not just in soil, but in spirit — for Maxville Manor, as the long-awaited redevelopment project officially broke ground.

The momentous occasion reflected a deep commitment from SDG Counties, the Province of Ontario, and the local community to a brighter future for seniors.

SDG Counties has pledged a $4 million contribution toward the revitalization of Maxville Manor — a transformative effort to upgrade existing beds and add capacity, increasing total beds to 160 from 122. The province, represented by the Minister of Long-Term Care, Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, praised the site as a model for modern long-term care, highlighting how the new Capital Funding Program will accelerate and support such critical developments.

Martin Lang, Warden of SDG Counties, stood proudly at the ceremony.

“The demand for long-term care is real and growing. Families across SDG Counties rely on Maxville Manor — not just for a safe place, but for a home filled with compassion and community. That’s what today’s groundbreaking represents: a promise to meet that need, now and into the future," said Lang. “This milestone wouldn’t be possible without partnership — from the province, from municipalities, and from the many community members and families who continue to support fundraising efforts. Together, we are building more than bricks and mortar — we are building peace of mind, for today and for generations to come.”

Indeed, fundraising has been robust — it was announced by North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald that more than $10 million of the $11-million goal has already been secured. MacDonald had special praise for local donor Bernard McDonell who has helped provide significant financial relief to the project.

Together, these investments signal more than a construction project — they represent a promise: a safer, warmer, more caring home for generations to come.
