SDG COUNTIES, Ontario - Whether you want to try fishing for the first time or are looking to introduce family or friends to the sport, free fishing equipment is available for borrowing this summer at Gray’s Creek Conservation Area through the Raisin Region Conservation Authority’s (RRCA) participation in the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters’ (OFAH) TackleShare program.
The program provides visitors with access to rods, reels, and tackle at no cost, helping remove barriers to enjoying one of Ontario’s most popular outdoor activities.
“Fishing is a great way to spend time outdoors, connect with nature, and create lasting memories with family and friends,” said Claudia Munafo, RRCA’s Public Information Coordinator. “Through the TackleShare program, we’re making it easier for residents and visitors to experience recreational fishing and learn more about our region’s aquatic ecosystems.”
Equipment may be borrowed for up to one week at a time. Visitors can stop by the marina office building at Gray’s Creek Conservation Area, located at 18045 County Road 2, Cornwall, during operating hours to sign out equipment. Current operating hours can be found on the RRCA website at rrca.on.ca/Marina. The facility remains open for the season until Sept. 28.
Gray’s Creek Conservation Area is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, offering 100 acres of natural space that includes walking trails, a picnic area, playground, native plant demonstration site, and a self-guided arboretum tour. The marina also provides convenient access to the St. Lawrence River, known for its excellent fishing opportunities.
“Visitors can enjoy a full day outdoors at Gray’s Creek,” said Munafo. “With its fishing access and connections to the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, it’s an ideal destination for families, cyclists, and anyone looking to enjoy the waterfront.”
In Ontario, anglers less than 18 years of age do not require a fishing licence. Licence-free fishing periods are also available for Canadians, including the upcoming Father’s Day weekend on June 14–15. Families are invited to participate in RRCA’s annual Family Fishing Afternoon – which features a children’s fishing contest – on July 3 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Gray’s Creek. The RRCA encourages all anglers to follow safe boating and fishing practices and to comply with provincial fishing regulations.
