Nine more plaques round out SDG Counties Historic Tour

Long sault plaque

SDG COUNTIES, Ontario — SDG Counties and SDG Tourism are proud to announce the installation of nine additional historic plaques across the region, marking the completion of the SDG Historic Tour. This expanded collection now includes 27 plaques throughout SDG Counties.

This complements nearly 40 additional plaques installed in the City of Cornwall.

The newest plaques include local artwork and highlight a diverse mix of stories, communities, and historic moments across the region. The new plaques include:

  • Thompson General Store (Iroquois)
  • A Village of Industry (Winchester)
  • Downtown Winchester
  • Berwick
  • Long Sault
  • The Osnabruck Centre Fire
  • North Lancaster
  • Dutch Meadows (Morrisburg)
  • Dr. Marian Hilliard (Morrisburg)

This milestone was made possible thanks to the support (both financial, and in-kind) and collaboration of numerous community partners.

SDG Counties in particular extends thanks to Dundas County Archives, Glengarry County Archives, the SD and G Historical Society, local museums, the SDG Highlanders Foundation, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 48 (Morrisburg) including its ladies auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 370 (Iroquois), the Downtown Winchester Committee, the Thompson family, Swank Construction, Steven Byvelds, MP Eric Duncan, and various community groups whose contributions helped bring these stories to life.

The SDG Historic Tour is designed as a self-guided experience, inviting residents and visitors alike to explore the region’s heritage at their own pace. Each plaque offers a window into the people, events, and communities that shaped SDG Counties — soon to be supported by new QR codes that allow visitors to access additional information directly from their mobile devices.

Next spring SDG Counties will unveil a website that includes its own plaques, along with those from the City of Cornwall, so that history enthusiasts can seek more information than what is displayed on the plaques in one convenient online location.

“Completing the SDG Historic Tour is an important accomplishment for our communities,” said SDG Counties’ Tourism Supervisor Karina Belanger. “This project preserves local history while creating a unique tourism asset that residents and visitors can experience year-round.”

The SDG Historic Tour is part of a broader regional initiative to promote heritage, tourism, and community engagement. The partnership with the City of Cornwall ensures a seamless experience for those exploring both SDG Counties and Cornwall’s nearly 70 plaques combined.

All of the plaques have been prepared by Pierre Giroux, a world-class local artist who studied in Italy, before filling Canadian galleries with his paintings and inspiration.
