SDG COUNTIES, Ontario - The City of Cornwall and the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG Counties) are providing one-time funding in 2026 to local food banks and food programs to help support residents facing rising pressures related to food insecurity, housing instability, and affordability.
This one-time funding is fully provincially funded through the Housing Prevention Program. The City of Cornwall and SDG Counties are allocating $79,307 in accordance with program guidelines that support individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The funding is being directed to front-line, community-based organizations that provide immediate support to vulnerable residents.
“Food insecurity is a growing concern in our community, and many local organizations are seeing unprecedented demand for their services,” said Mayor Justin Towndale of the City of Cornwall. “This one-time funding recognizes the critical role these organizations play in supporting residents and helps ensure they can continue providing essential services to those who need them most.”
The following organizations will receive approximately $15,860 in funding through this initiative:
- Community Food Share which serves Winchester, Morrisburg and Williamsburg
- Agape Centre in Cornwall
- St. Vincent de Paul Society in Cornwall
- St. Vincent de Paul Society in Alexandria
- House of Lazarus in Mountain
“This initiative reflects the shared responsibility of municipalities to support residents facing financial hardship,” said Francois Landry, Warden of SDG Counties. “By working together with our community partners, we are providing timely, practical support to organizations that are responding directly to food insecurity across the region.”
Funding recipients are required to submit receipts and reporting in accordance with established funding guidelines to ensure accountability and transparency.
“Our local food programs are on the front lines of responding to poverty and affordability pressures,” said Mellissa Morgan, General Manager of Human Services. “This one-time funding helps address immediate needs while reinforcing our commitment to working collaboratively with community partners to support vulnerable residents.”
The City of Cornwall and SDG Counties will continue to work with community organizations to address food insecurity and broader affordability challenges throughout the region.
