SDG COUNTIES, Ontario - The City of Cornwall is providing critical support to residents evacuated from Sandy Lake First Nation, following an escalating wildfire threat in Northern Ontario.

Emergency Management Ontario (EMO) confirmed on Sunday that evacuees would be arriving in Cornwall. The first group of 155 individuals arrived at approximately 4 a.m. on June 9. Additional evacuees are expected throughout this afternoon and evening. In total, Cornwall is preparing to welcome up to 450 individuals displaced by the wildfire emergency.

“The safety and well-being of evacuees is our top priority, and we are committed to providing them with the care and compassion they deserve,” said Leighton Woods, Cornwall Deputy Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator. “Cornwall has a long history of rallying in moments of need and today is no exception.”

A wide network of support has been activated to assist with the response. The Dev Centre is playing a central role as a key site for accommodation and services, offering a well-equipped environment for those arriving.

The Canadian Red Cross is fully deployed on-site, leading the coordination of logistics and daily operations. Health and wellness are also top of mind, with the Eastern Ontario Health Unit working alongside local partners to provide medical support and health services.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is also playing a vital role in the response, with staff on-site acting as key liaisons to ensure culturally informed support and effective communication with evacuees.

The City of Cornwall, alongside its partners, remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring evacuees are welcomed with dignity, supported with care, and surrounded by community.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
