SDG COUNTIES, Ontario - SDG Tourism is inviting the public to help preserve and showcase the history of the Historic SDG Jail by donating artefacts and sharing stories connected to the site.
The Cornwall Jail, which closed in 2002 after more than a century of operation, is now a popular tourism destination known as the Historic SDG Jail. Officials are working to expand exhibits and enrich visitor experiences with new displays and narratives drawn from the community.
“Every object and every story has the potential to bring this historic site to life in new ways,” said Becky Ranger, Historic SDG Jail coordinator. “By sharing memories and artefacts, residents can help us ensure the Cornwall Jail’s legacy is preserved for generations to come.”
Artefacts being sought include hardware such as locks, shackles, security items, uniforms, badges, and contraband, as well as documents, photos, and video footage. Donations will be curated into new public exhibits and help develop tour content and historical publications.
A special intake day will be held at the jail on Sunday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Community members can bring items directly to the site at 11 Water Street West, Cornwall. Those unable to attend can arrange a private appointment by contacting jail@sdgcounties.ca or calling 1-844-814-JAIL.
Stories and personal accounts are also welcomed. To share memories or to discuss artefacts before donating, residents can contact Becky Ranger at jail@sdgcounties.ca to schedule a meeting.
“The Cornwall Jail is an important piece of our shared history,” said Ranger. “By working with the community, we can preserve its stories and strengthen the connection between past and present.”
